I don't know why old books make me happy. Even if, or especially if, they are battered and bruised. Knowing they have been around a while, and have found a nice cosy home far far away from disrespect and disuse and *shudder* landfill is one simple pleasure that never tires.
I do too. Battered and bruised often means they were much loved by whoever used to own them and I think that's tangible. Realising that has stopped me being so precious with my own collection of new faves. I want my love to show when I eventually have to pass them on.

Same here. I've a very early 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' by T .E. Lawrence (of Arabia) - sadly not 1st edition but very old all the same.
A really old Wuthering Heights - with a great smell!!!
My favourite is a small pocket bible that belonged to a soldier in WW I. No idea whether he survived or not. It's inscribed by a General - forget who off hand - so I suppose it must have been a senior officers bible.

Sometimes I find old letters shoved inside. And pictures. Sad really

Old books have such soul. When you remarked about the old letters - as a librarian, we find all sorts of things inside books, photos and letters and tickets and memos...usually they are anonymous. I just found a photo inside a book of a group of people a few weeks ago and it was a book that had been on the bookshelf that I was checking up on its circulation figures - and one of the people in the snapshot looked familiar - she came in a few weeks later and was astonished when I handed it to her - and very happy :)

ahhh... I got one book once and it was full of pictures, and even though I haven't the first clue who they are I can't bring myself to throw them away. silly really...
